There are still many good opportunities!
When applying for remaining places, the mobility grant cannot be guaranteed in advance,
but you will definitely benefit from the tuition fee waiver.
The mobility grant will then be calculated by KIT in fall 2022 and communicated to you.
Also, please book an appointment with your Erasmus coordinator Prof. Dr. Eiff early on.
This interview is part of the application process.
Requirements for an Erasmus+ Scholarship
In principle, every student who is enrolled at KIT in a regular degree program leading to a university degree (B.Sc., M.Sc., Ph.D.) - regardless of his/her nationality - is entitled to participate in the ERASMUS+ program. Both at the time of application and during the entire stay abroad, an enrollment at KIT must be in effect.
Students who are enrolled at KIT for a limited period of time within the framework of other exchange programs are excluded from participation in ERASMUS+.
In addition, candidates should have a sufficient command of the lecture language in the host country to be able to participate meaningfully in the lectures, i.e. at least level B1. For more information on the required language level, please refer to the list of partner universities.
Bachelor Students
- The application for an Erasmus exchange can be submitted at the end of the 3rd semester (within the above-mentioned internal application deadlines).
- To apply, at least 48 LPs of the first 2 semesters must have been successfully completed, including all orientation examinations.
- Before the start of the stay abroad, at least 24 LPs for each additional completed semester must have been successfully completed.
- The average grade should be at least 2.5 (grade extract) with no open examination repetitions.
Master Students
- can go abroad starting from the 1st Master's semester.
- In this case, the application process should be iniated during the last Bachelor semster; candidates will only receive an acceptance subject to continued enrollment at KIT for the Master's degree.
Application Process
1. Preparation
- Familiarize yourself with the partner universities you can choose from in Civil Engineering. A more detailed overview is also available on the homepage of the International Students Office (with keywords "Erasmus-SMS", "Department of Civil Engineering, Geo- and Environmental Science", "Civil Engineering").
- Choose courses from at least 2 universities with the help of the module handbooks, online course catalogues or course descriptions, which you can find on the homepage of the host university. In doing so, take approx. 30 ECTS credits in each semester, just like at KIT, this may also include language courses. Also ask yourself which course credits you would like to take abroad (e.g. compulsory subjects, electives or coursework).
- Fill out the Learning Agreement (download) .
(Please have one Learning Agreement for each university of your choice)
Bachelor students: Discuss the Learning Agreement with your advisor Dr.-Ing. Harald Schneider and have him sign the agreement in the appropriate section of the LA. If you are about to transfer to the Master's program, please find a mentor ahead of time to discuss the alignment of your courses.
Master's students: Check with your mentor for a list of desired courses. Please have the mentor sign the Learning Agreementtn following the advising meeting.
2. Interview with the Erasmus Coordinator (via Zoom)
-
The interview with the departmental coordinator Prof. O. Eiff is part of the application and is intended primarily as a way for you to get to know each other and to receive professional advice in addition to that of your mentor.
Please make this appointment early (just send an email to erasmus-civil∂bgu.kit.edu). We cannot guarantee that there will be enough appointments available in January 2022.
If possible, please prepare a recent grade transcript and 2 Learning Ageements for this appointment.
3. Submission of the Application Documents
Upload the complete documents to the Mobilty Online Portal before the application deadline:
- Learning Agreements, completed as above and signed by the mentor,
- Letter of motivation (is meant for the KIT coordinator, max. 1-2 pages, in German or English, describe your career, motivation and study plans for your 1st choice university),
- Curriculum vitae
- Current transcript of grades /achievements in your studies so far,
- Bachelor's degree incl. grades
- High School certificate
- Current proof of knowledge of the required language level at the partner universities
!! Only complete application documents will be considered!
4. Nomination at Partner University
- After successful application you will be nominated by the IStO at your partner university. You will automatically receive an e-mail from erasmus-out ∂does-not-exist.intl kit edu asking you to confirm your place in Mobility Online.
- You will then have to submit the necessary documents for enrolment at the partner university on your own by the relevant registration deadlines. We recommend that you check the deadlines on the host university's website in advance so that you can submit the documents as quickly as possible. As a rule, in addition to information about your person, subject, etc., the Learning Agreement is also required so that your study plan can be checked on site and any necessary corrections can be agreed on PRIOR to the start of your stay.

Recognition of External Study Achievements
Please talk with your mentor during the discussion on the Learning Agreement (see also application process) about a possible recognition of the achievements acquired abroad. You can list the results in Table B of the Learning Agreement (subject to reservation). However, a final decision on the recognition will only be made once you have submitted the learning content of the courses attended abroad (upon your retun to KIT).
To start the recognition process, please contact either the Examination Committee Bachelor or theExamination Committee Master once you return from your semster aborad. The forms for the recognition of external study achievements are available on their websites.
When can I apply?
Each fall (from October - January) you can apply for the next academic year (WS or SS or both). This means, that as of October 2021 - January 2022 you can apply for an exchnage in the academic year 22/23.
In addition, until July 1st each year, you can apply for remaining places in the SS from the last round - e.g. until July 1, 2021 you can still apply for the the SS 2022 and until July 1, 2022 you would be able to apply for remaining places in SS 2023.
For information on the deadlines please refer to the information at Studying Abroad/Civil Engineering.
What is the Learning Agreement?
The Learning Agreement is a study agreement listing the courses you would like to attend at the host university.
Please fill in the section "BEFORE THE MOBILITY" (information about yourself, incl. Table A (= study plan abroad) + Table B (list of courses you would like to have recognized at KIT). Discuss the course selection and a possible recognition with your mentor. Please fill out a Learning Agreement for each university of choice.
Can the Learning Agreement still be changed at the host university?
Yes. Changes can usually be made without any problems.
It is common that deviations from the original Learning Agreement occur on site. For this purpose there is a change form in the Learning Agreement in the section "DURING THE MOBILITY". You enter the courses you want to delete or add in a table and have the new selection signed by both the coordinator on site and the coordinator at KIT.
How many ECTS do I have to complete abroad?
How much is the mobility allowance?
The amount of the monthly mobility grant is based on country groups and varies annually, current information can be found on the INTL homepage. The grant is based on the price level of the host country and ranges between 330€ and 450€ (acad. year 2019/2020).
Funding is not necessarily available for the full duration of the stay. As of 2019, the maximum funding period for one semester is 4-5 months max (depending on the country) and for two semesters 9 months max, even if the length of stay is longer.
What language level is required?
When must the required language level be achieved?
In most cases, the level of the lecture language required must be reached by the beginning of your stay. You could therefore acquire the necessary skills in the time prior to your stay.
However, some partner universities require proof of sufficient language skills already at the time of application. Please check with your partner university in advance for such requirements.
Also, keep in mind that the required language skills indicate the mimimal level applicants should have. In order to successfully participate in the courses and exams abroad, we would recommend to have at least the required level of language proficiency.
What counts as proof of language proficiency?
The following documents are accepted as proof of language proficiency:
- Graded courses from the KIT Language Centre (in this case, please enclose a separate certificate or - if the language course is included in your transcript of grades - mark it in colour)
- DAAD Test Certificate (SPZ)
- official language certificates with indication of the language level achieved (CEFR) such as IELTS, TOEFL, DELF, Cambridge certificate...
- The high school diploma is sufficient for the faculty-internal application as proof of a B2 level English according to the European Framework of Reference if it shows that the language was also taken during the last 2 years of school and the average grade achieved incl. Abitur examination was at least 10 points. For a C1 level, an average of at least 13 points must have been achieved.
What are the criteria for selection?
The selection criteria are their grade point average (in the Bachelor's and, if applicable, Master's), taking into account their study progress, language skills in the language of the country as well as in the language of the lecture, motivation, personal commitment, completeness of the documents, punctual submission.
How will I get recognition for achievements made abroad?
In general, you do not have to get credit for all the work done abroad. redited. Crediting achievements from another university is only possible within the framework of the rules of the examination regulations and your study plan. This must be clarified with your mentor or with the study coordinator Bachelor.
As a rule, recognition is granted as an elective module and optionally with or without a grade. Recognition as a compulsory module with a grade can only be granted by an individual assessment of a professor of our faculty who offers a comparable course. If you are seeking recognition as a compulsory module with a grade, it is essential that you clarify this with the relevant professors before starting your stay abroad.
For recognition, you must contact the Bachelor or Master Examination Board in the semester following the stay abroad. You can download the recognition forms from their websites and have them signed off by the responsible mentor or professor.
