This second course in environmental fluid mechanics introduces the effects of buoyancy on flows in the natural environment. Topics relate primarily to lake and reservoir mixing and include two-layer and continuously stratified internal waves, linear instability analysis, discussion of buoyant jets and plumes, the effects of buoyancy on turbulence, and large-amplitude motions, which include density currents and internal hydraulic jumps.  Laboratory exercises demonstrate internal waves, lock exchange, and an application of the CORMIX expert modeling system.
